As every year, the Mexican government has updated its official immigration fees for 2026. These fees apply to services and documents issued by the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM) and are payable directly to the government as part of the residency process in Mexico. They apply, for example, to the issuance and renewal of residency cards, canjes (exchange of visa for residency cards), changes of immigration status, and work or job permits, among other immigration procedures.
Most Common Government Fees for 2026
The following government fees apply to the issuance or renewal of Mexican residency cards:

-

These fees are established annually by the Mexican government, they are mandatory government payments and are independent of any professional or legal service fees.
About the 50% Discount
There is a potential 50% discount on immigration government fees for certain applicants, such as those applying based on family ties or job offers.
However, it is important to note that clear and uniform official guidelines for 2026 have not yet been fully defined by the authorities. As a result, eligibility and approval of the discount may vary depending on the specific case and the INM office handling the application. We strongly recommend confirming whether the discount applies before planning or making any government payments.
International Comparison: Mexico vs. Other Countries
Even after the 2026 update, Mexico remains one of the most affordable countries for legal residency when compared internationally. Below is a general comparison of government fees in USD:
| Country | Residency Type | Approx. Government Fees (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green Card (Permanent Residence) | $1,200 – $1,700 | Does not include attorneys, medical exams, biometrics, or long processing times | |
| Permanent Residence | $1,000+ per adult | Additional mandatory costs apply | |
| Permanent Resident Card | $760 per person | Simpler process, fewer formal requirements |
Important Clarification: Fees vs. Financial Solvency Requirements
One of the most common misunderstandings is the belief that increases in government immigration fees are linked to higher financial solvency requirements for residency visas. This is not the case. Government immigration fees are paid to the INM within Mexico, while financial solvency requirements are evaluated separately by Mexican consulates abroad. These are two completely independent processes.
As of now, no official announcement has been made regarding new financial solvency requirements for residency visas at Mexican consulates. While updates are expected at some point, no significant increase is anticipated. We will keep you informed as soon as consulates officially release updated requirements.
